Profile Information

The Institute´s research activities can be classified in principle into biocatalysis and a part which can be described as "Advanced compounds, techniques and procedures". Additional highlights are due to the long-term experience in modern Carbohydrate Chemistry as well as the synthesis of higly functionalised natural products and biologically active analogues in enantio- and diastereomerically pure form. Advanced compounds: in the field of drugs,auxiliaries for glycobiology, molecular sensors for biochemistry and food technology, advanced techniques and procedures: biocatalysis,enantioselective chemical catalysis, glyotechnology. The institute is the administrative centre of Spezialforschungsbereich "Biocatalysis". Biocatalysis means using the special properties of the catalysts of Nature, the enzymes, such as: high selectivity, mild reaction conditions and the minimisation of wastes in order to solve problems in the fields of chemistry, technology and ecology.
