Abstract

Design model for the compression capacity of bolted angle members including joint stiffness. Based on research activities at Graz University of Technology, it was found out that the joint stiffness has substantial influence on the compression member capacity of bolted angles. Formulae for the equivalent spring stiffness of practical joint configurations were derived. Subsequently, a design model for angle members in compression was developed, that is applicable for the whole range of joint stiffness (from hinged to fully restrained). This design model allows to calculate the internal forces based on II. order theory for an individual member (1D-model) with eccentricity and spring stiffness at both ends, including an equivalent bow imperfection e 0. The compression member capacity is based on the elastic capacity of the member. This paper presents the design model in detail. Additionally, the background of the model is shown, by means of comprehensive calibration and validation based on real tests and numerous numerical tests, respectively. Based on that, also complex failure modes, such as lateral torsional buckling are covered.
