Within the scope of the project ODILIA, an information and navigation system for blind and visually impaired people has to be developed for the purpose of safe and enhanced mobility and mobility training. The paradigm of the project is to guarantee safe mobility at any place and at any time. Based on a digital path network and a geodatabase, the information component of the total system provides all necessary details of the surrounding environment. The navigation part serves for a precise positioning and safe guidance. Tailored to the needs of blind people, an MMI (braille, voice communication) opens a wide range of usage and applicability. The primary objective of ODILIA is the development of a demonstrator prototype which consists of a desktop, a mobile unit and data synchronization between these two system parts. For the first time, blind and visually impaired people should be able to use a navigation system for safe on-trip guidance and, on the same data basis, should have the possibility of pre-trip information and training at home.
