Profile Information

Know-Center Graz was founded in 2001 within the framework of the COMET K1-program and became Austria's leading research center for data-driven business innovative information and communication technologies. DATA-DRIVEN BUSINESS: Data-Driven Business means business models and processes that generate real business value out of unstructured data. In most cases, large amounts of data must be obtained from relevant sources, interpreted and utilized. BIG DATA: Particularly large, heterogeneous and unstructured data volumes, as well as live analysis (streaming, real-time), pose a challenge to current technologies. With that regard, we play an active role on the forefront, and two of our Areas (Knowledge Discovery and Social Computing) focus on big data with the aim of creating real added value for enterprises. COGNITIVE COMPUTING: In the area of cognitive computing, we follow an integrated approach: Although excellent technology is absolutely important in that respect, for us it is only part of a greater whole. Companies and their business models and processes depend on the people who implement, creatively adapt and critically analyze them. Our cognitive computing approach, which is anchored in our Areas Knowledge Visualization and Ubiquitous Personal Computing, takes advantage of the strengths of humans and machines and combines them. Know-Center conducts applied and interdisciplinary research in the field of computer science in the areas of data-driven business, big data and cognitive computing. To that end, Know-Center works closely with the Institute of Knowledge Technologies of Graz University of Technology. Together with Prof. Lindstaedt, Prof. Albert conducts research in the area of cognitive science. Specific research topics include search technologies, machine learning methods and knowledge extraction from large data sets, presentation and visualization of massive amounts of information, efficient use of information in social media channels, as well as contextualization and personalization of information. Cognitive Computing Sytems These cognitive computing systems make Know-Center fit for big data and data-driven business in Austrian and European economies. Area Knowledge Discovery In the area of Knowledge Discovery research and development of semi-automatic methods for analysis, enrichment and linking of complex knowledge bases are performed. Area Knowledge Visualization In the area of Knowledge Visualization research and development of visual methods for the analysis, representation and communication of complex knowledge bases are performed. Area Knowledge Visualization In the area of Knowledge Discovery research and development of semi-automatic methods for analysis, enrichment and linking of complex knowledge bases are performed. Area Social Computing The area of Social Computing focuses on knowledge extraction from and the structuring and utilization of social networks and media data. Area Ubiquitous Personal Computing In the area of Ubiquitous Personal Computing personal data are collected, analyzed and processed using desktop and mobile sensor technology. Area Services & Development The area of Software & Service Development creates methods for design, development and quality management, operation and documentation of software solutions.
