The internal combustion engine still is and also will be the dominating power unit in the future; engine out emissions and fuel consumption are considerably determined by the combustion process. The trends and objectives for the combustion system development are determined to a great extend by the intended and foreseeable legal requirements for reducing emissions and fuel consumption. For spark ignition engine processes, the main focus will be the reduction of the fuel consumption: New potentials will be opened by the implementation of variable valve trains and direct injection, both being able to reduce the main disadvantages of spark ignition engines by means of throttle free load control. For Diesel engine processes the reduction of particle and NOx emissions will be the main concern; further development work has to be done in the areas of the injection systems, charge motion an the combustion chamber design. For the short to medium term future the goal will also be to combine the advantages of both the Diesel and the Otto cycle engines by homogeneous charge compression ignition concepts. The vision is to achieve virtually zero emission even without exhaust gas after-treatment.
