Despite considerable improvements over past years, traditional methods for the assessment of traffic status specifically congestion detection still lack precision and reliability, which is mostly related to system inherent weaknesses of methodologies applied. It is this projects objective to combine and fuse information/data (FCD, stationary detectors) originating from different methods to greatly improve quality and reliability of traffic state information, hence to improve the performance of existing systems and based on this to enable reliable automated traffic control systems. The methodology of fusing different data sources (FCD, stationary detectors, ANPR camera system) for traffic state estimation and congestion detection is tested within the project on a referencing road section which is part of a motorway section and urban streets in the area of Vienna.
