Abstract
A survey of 28 springs at the Fogo and Furnas volcanoes highlights the potential of volcanic sources to contaminate water, there by posing a potential hazard to the quality of drinking water. The development of the first conceptual model for the hydrogeothermal system in São Miguel allows deciphering the geochemical and isotopic evolution of natural discharges. Meteoric water penetrated into the ground (δ18O H2O =-3 ± 1 ‰ V-SMOW; δD H2O =-13 ± 7 ‰ V-SMOW) and was chemical evolved by the uptake of volcanic gases (δ34S SO4 = 0 ± 1 ‰ V-CDT; δ13C GAS =-5 ± 2‰ V-PDB), heat and leaching of local rocks and its precipitates.
