Abstract
In 2016 the Institute of internal combustion engines and thermodynamics of Graz University of Technology carried out full scale fire tests [1] at Koralmtunnel (33km railwaytunnel) in Austria. The focus of these tests was on smoke propagation within the emergency-tube and the cross-passages. Starting with small fires of 2-4 MW heat release, the testing was proceeded with tests up to 21 MW. In addition to the heat-release, extensive measurements of thermal conditions and gas composition have been performed.
In further investigations 3D-CFD simulations of representative fire-tests have been done with use of Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) and Smokeview [2]. Thereby the experimental data have been validated and the suitability of FDS for tunnel applications was tested.
