Abstract

Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) enables the continuous monitoring of strain, temperature and acoustic signals over distances of several tens of kilometers. The sensing cables can be embedded within the structures and therefore deformation information can be obtained at places which are not accessible by geodetic methods. Furthermore, existing fiber optic communication cables can be used for sensing. Thus, no installation of sensors is required. This article demonstrates that DFOS can be used to detect and localize cracks, leakages and construction activities in tunneling, landslide and pipeline monitoring.
