Abstract
Fluid filled steel tanks are often made without anchors to the basement. In cases of earthquakes with higher magnitude local uplifts of the cylindrical barrel occur. Due to frequent uplifts, also combined with multiple plastic cycles, cracks may grow based on low cycle fatigue behaviour.
In part 1 of this contribution first the concept of Eurocode for verification of the tank uplift during earthquakes is presented. Then the results of a research project are summed up, which was focused on the realistic low cycle fatigue behaviour of tank bottom plates during earthquakes.
