Abstract

is article debates the relation between architecture and its surrounding landscape. Using the example of the villas of Cos- tozza, connected by a system of galleries to the neighboring caves, Manfè argues that architecture and device can be the same thing. Natural ventilation is in fact used as mitigation system, an idea that tri ered the curiosity and wonder of au- thors across the centuries, from Palladio to Milizia, and can still teach us a lesson about the importance of the technological aspects of design. Fantuz, instead, acknowledges that in the age of Anthropocene we are reminded that there is no distinction between nature and culture and we humans are part of a nely interconnected system of relations and we carry global respon- sibility for it. He looks at the system of galleries and villas in Costozza as an example of integration of architecture with its territory, and uses it to advocate for a greater consideration of natural dynamics in the planning of our cities.
