Abstract

In the structural analysis of composite road bridges on the basis of the Eurocode (EN 1994 – 2), the composite girder is generally represented by an equivalent steel beam. Each main gir-der is modelled as an individual beam with rigid interface between steel and concrete, because the effects of slip at this interface may be neglected, provided that the design of the shear connectors is in accordance with the code provisions. In the first part of the paper, a global beam model is presented, which takes into account the flexible connectors in the interface between steel girder and concrete deck and which also leads to modified normal stresses and longitudinal shear forces at the inter-face respectively. In the second part of the paper, for representative continuous road bridges, it is shown how the flexibility of the headed stud shear connectors in the interface between steel and concrete may affect the structural analysis and design results, if the structure is designed by omitting this flexibility.
