Abstract

By reaction of the heptasilane MeSi(SiMe2SiMeBr2)3 with H2O, H2S, H3N and H2NMe, the heptasilaadamantanes MeSi(SiMe2SiMeE)3 with E=O, S, NH and NMe have been prepd. in excellent to medium yields depending on E. Mol. structures of all four adamantanes have been obtained from X-ray diffraction expts., and multinuclear NMR-spectroscopy has been used to further characterize the cages. The exptl. bond lengths, bond angles and torsion angles agree well with results of ab inito MO calcns. Redn. of the heptasilane MeSi(SiMe2SitBuBr2)3 with lithium-naphthalenide afforded the heptasilanortricyclene MeSi(SiMe2SitBu)3 a cage contg. a cyclotrisilane ring stabilized by the bulky tert-Bu groups. No crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction expts. have been obtained yet. The 29Si spectrum of the nortricyclene consists of three lines, and the shifts agree excellently with values predicted by ab initio calcns. [on SciFinder(R)]
