Abstract

The electrocinetic properties of macroscopic solids are able to describe surface modifications as well as the interaction abilities during processing. Usually the zetapotential (ZP) is measured and can be used to develop, optimize and control the manufacturing process. The zeta-potential of natural and regenerated cellulose fibres is noticeably changed during the pre-treatment and finishing process and it is important for the quality of the final product (whiteness, colour, hydrophily). The pre-treatment of cellulose fibres improves the accessibility of dissociable groups. Further hydro-philizing (NaOH, Pectinase) causes structural changes. The progress of the process of chemicals as well as enzymatic treatment correlates with the ZP. A certain magnitude of the ZP has to be obtained during the following oxidation process (bleaching) in order to enable the optimal interaction with fluorescence whiteners and dyes.
