Abstract

A systematic search for practice-oriented diagnostic methods should be carried out. Through the assessment of the methods in the selected dental applications it should be possible to demonstrate the most interesting procedures.

The aim of the thesis is to give an overview of diagnostic methods, which are capable of being integrated in dental instruments, like (contra-angle) handpieces, in a dental practice. On the basis of the implementation of the methods in the products, the user can be supported in confirming his diagnosis and/or in performing the treatments. As a consequence the satisfaction of the user and customer can be substantially raised. Furthermore the functionality of the most interesting technologies, as well as the advantages by integration of the methods into the treatment procedure of the dentist should be shown.

Via the search of dental products and scientific literature the dental applications as well as the diagnostic methods are determined for the selected application fields and summarized. Criteria for the assessment of the applications and methods are defined and templates are provided for the evaluation. The assessment of the diagnostic methods is carried out according to specified criteria and two systematic partial steps, a preselection and a detailed assessment.

The most promising applications for the use of diagnostic methods were selected due to the search. Those diagnosis procedures which are or could be applied in dental offices are stated in the thesis. The assessment of the importance of the applications, as well as the results of the preselection and the detailed assessment are shown in separate matrices.

The present thesis permits an overview of diagnostic methods for selected dental applications and delivers a comprehensible assistance for the decision of the imple-mentation of the most promising methods into dental products.
