Abstract

The new Semmering Base Tunnel, with a length of 27.3 km, is one of the key projects being completed in the expansion and upgrading of Austria’s southern railway. The railway is also part of the European Union’s Baltic-Adriatic Corridor. As preliminary measure for tunnelling, slope stabilization measures and ramps using the reinforced earth method were constructed. During construction and after completion of these structures, the systematic geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring included a newly developed system for fiber-optic strain measurements. These measurements provide insight into the development of tensile forces within the geogrids and into the load bearing behaviour of the reinforced earth structures
