Considering the fact that numerous lift joints exist in RCC dams due to roller-compacting construction method, the concept of hydraulically equivalent joint width is introduced to evaluate the seepage property of the dams. Based on some research work on the optimal seepage control scheme for the ca. 200m high Longtan RCC gravity dam being under construction and the back analysis of the seepage performance of the 132 m high Jiangya RCC gravity dam built a few years ago, the major conclusion has been drawn that the main concept and method for seepage control design of RCC dams are the impermeabilization upstream, drainage inside, and again impermeabilization downstream.
