Modeling and Experimental Evaluation of a Novel Electrochemical Potassium Sensor for Single Use

Abstract

Water and electrolyte balance in the body is a significance for patients health. Proper distribution of the electrolytes between intracellular and extracellular spaces is critical. The potassium ions are one of the most important positively charged electrolytes within the body cells and only minor changes in ion concentration have a major impact. However, an accurate measurement of the potassium concentration is only possible with laboratory equipment or calibration effort.
This thesis focuses on investigating a potassium-selective sensor to create a time-depending simulation model that emulates the sensor considering the theoretical aspects and the real behaviour. The theoretical model is based on literature and is transformed from a steady-state model to a transient simulation model. This includes measurements and the evaluation of data to create a model that delivers results close to the real sensor. The electrochemical processes of the individual electrodes are measured and analyzed.
Another important aspect is the analysis and improvement of the measurement setup, which is checked by a series of tests. Tests to determine influences on the measured signal are also carried out. The changed measurement setup significantly improves the quality and validity of the measurement results. The model is designed with regards to a future implementation of methods to determine specific parameter. Certain hypotheses about sensor behaviour have been refuted, others have been confirmed. And due to this results and the theoretical calculations, the sensor model reproduces the real sensor very well.
