Abstract

The transformation of the electrical energy supply initiated by the energy turnaround to achieve the climate targets leads to a significant need for expansion in the electrical distribution and transmission networks. For distribution grids at the medium voltage level, innovative medium voltage direct current transmission can make an important contribution to safe and economical grid operation. Compared with MVAC cable systems, bipolar MVDC cable systems can have a significantly higher transmission capacity when identical XLPE-insulated medium voltage cables are used. The economic efficiency of MVDC cable systems is examined on the basis of the transmission losses, and it is shown that the use of an MVDC cable system leads to a significant reduction in transmission losses even for short distances.
