Abstract

In a method for determining the particle count in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines, a characteristic variable for the quantity of particles is determined, for example in the form of the blackening of a filter or the determination of the concentration, wherein furthermore the suction time and/or the suction volume of the exhaust gas are measured, and wherein if need be the blackening rate is calculated from the characteristic variable and the suction time and/or the suction volume by means of a first conversion function, wherein the particle count is determined from the characteristic variable, the suction time and/or the suction volume and the data from the first conversion function by means of a second conversion function. To now be able to expand the evaluation possibilities to include a statement regarding the particle count, the pressure conditions at the filter are additionally determined, the mean particle diameter is determined from this and the quantity of particles by means of a third conversion function, and, with the aid of various intermediate calculation processes and conversion functions, which may however all be combined to form a common fourth function, the particle count is determined from the characteristic variable, the suction time and/or the suction volume, the data from the first conversion function and from the determined mean particle diameter by means of said fourth conversion function.
