Abstract
Within the scope of research projects of TU Graz in cooperation with Austrian Power Grid AG (APG) from 2017 to 2019, capacitive instrument transformers were installed in various substations in addition to the existing infrastructure. These enabled highly accurate and precise measurement of the voltages in the grid node. Knowledge of the transient voltage situation and its effect on the grid will become increasingly important in the future for the safe and reliable operation of high voltage systems. Thus, a total data set of about 13,800 measurements was recorded. This total data set has now been analyzed in its entirety for the first time, and the necessary data handling, correlation, and evaluation methods have been developed for the existing voltage measurements. The correlation of the transient voltages with APG’s network protocol data and lightning location system data from the Austrian Lightning Detection and Information System (ALDIS) provided valuable insights into the transient voltage situation in the high voltage grid. Based on the correlations established, analyses can be carried out with regard to the causes of transient voltages and their effects within the high voltage grid. The present study shows specific results related to the effects of switching operations and lightning discharges and the range of transient voltages generated within the high voltage grid.
