Abstract

What is the very essence of public space? How to define it, what is its purpose? One might say that the way we transform urban space could be an indicator for our willingness to create inclusive, democratic, healthy and liveable cities: What kind of mobility receives priority? How accessible are public spaces? How green and sustainable is their design? The authors Aglaée Degros and Stefan Bendiks, the editors of the book "Traffic Space is Public Space" state that publice spaces are the essence of urban life. Given the urban challenges that lie ahead, it is imperative to work on a paradigm shift with respect to the spaces dedicated to mobility. - A plea and manual to transform cities.
