Abstract

Water is adsorbed from the gas phase on a Pt(111) surface covered with about a monolayer of potassium. Quantitative photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) of the K 2p and O 1s core levels indicates that adsorbed K and OH species (the latter formed by H2O dissociation) are hydrated during the adsorption of H2O at 100 K. The number of hydration molecules per ion is evaluated as 5.
