Helmholtz decomposition of compressible flow data at Mach 0.8

Research output: Contribution to journalArticle

Abstract

The Helmholtz decomposition separates a compressible velocity field into vortical and compressible structures. Based on the original Helmholtz theorem for an unbounded domain, we use a modified theorem to take bounded domains into account. Furthermore, we present two different calculation procedures of the obtained equations and show results of an application to a compressible flow field. For this purpose the Helmholtz decomposition is applied to a Mach 0.8 flow over a rectangular cavity.
