Feature Evaluation for Acoustic Pressure Signals from a Hybrid Simulation of Human Phonation

Abstract

Disorders of human voice production have severe effects on the quality of life of the affected individuals. A simulation approach is used to investigate the cause-effect chain in voice production showing typical characteristics of functional voice disorders, such as glottal closure insufficiency and left-right asymmetry. Therewith, 24 different voice configurations are simulated in a parameter study using a previously published hybrid aeroacoustic simulation model. Selected acoustic features are evaluated from the resulting acoustic signals at a microphone point. It is shown that the features allow distinguishing certain types of oscillation characteristics such as subglottal pressures or glottal closure characteristics.
