Abstract

This paper evaluates the accuracy of the VR system HTC Vive Pro as a 3D coordinate measurement instrument in industrial applications. Therefore, the system behavior is investigated at a testing facility that is designed for the calibration of geodetic devices like geodetic total stations, tilt sensors, geodetic gyroscopes or industrial laser scanners. Furthermore the performance of the VR system is compared to laser tracker measurements in a field test. All experiments show a high reproducibility of the position readings within a few millimeters and demon-strate the high potential of the hardware for 3D positioning. However, the VR system has systematic effects with magnitudes of several centimeters and faces problems when multiple base stations are used. Moreover, a tilt of about 0.4° of the reference plane with respect to the horizontal plane was detected.
