Abstract

Common digital street maps are highly generalized with regard to their road network topology. Usually, only one geographic entity represents a road segment, independent of its number of lanes. However, various existing and emerging ITS services require digital street maps with higher level of detail and accurate localization not only of roads, but of each separate lane centre line. In the research project ‘LaneS’, funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and the Austrian Research Promotion Agency, a cost-effective methodology is developed to derive lane centre lines from standard GNSS vehicle trajectories participating in real-world traffic (Floating Car Data). Based on these estimated lane positions, a lane-specific road network graph can be built. The evaluation of reliability and positional accuracy of the results underline the viability of the developed methodology and its potential for different applications and further research.
