Abstract

This paper presents the concept and the proposal for a framework of open publication services, called Pubfair. Pubfair aims at the establishment of a modular open source publishing platform, based on a distributed network of repositories, to ensure quality control and dissemination of a wide variety of research results, including data, publications and more. This platform can provide different stakeholders (funders, institutions, academic societies, individual scientists) with access to a set of functionalities to create their own dissemination channels, with open and transparent review processes. This model minimizes publishing costs while maintaining academic standards by connecting communities with iterative publishing services linked to their preferred repository. Such an environment has the capacity to transform the scholarly communication system, making it more research-centred, dissemination-oriented and innovation-friendly, while at the same time being collectively managed by the academic community.
