Abstract

A corpse was found in a state of advanced decomposition partly clothed and covered by vegation and soil. Pink coloured patches were seen on the clothing and the skin. This discolouration could be experimentally reproduced even without any cadaver material. For this purpose moistened cotton material was incubated with the same plant material as that used to cover the corpse. Detailed microbiological tests of the discoloured cotton material led to the identification of a chromogenic fungus Epicoccum nigrum LINK (syn. E. purpurascens).
