Abstract
Due to infrastructural conditions, there are many indications that (high) automation of driving systems will initially take place on high-level road network (motorways and expressways) and for a considerable period of time under mixed traffic conditions. In this paper, capacity changes due to automated vehicles are quantified on typical network elements of Austrian motorways for different scenarios in mixed traffic conditions based on microscopic traffic flow simulations. Subsequently, a macroscopic impact analysis on the entire Austrian motorway network was undertaken. The results provide the opportunity to estimate the impact of automated vehicles on performance and availability of high-level road networks and to consider them in an economic network planning of the transport infrastructure.
