Abstract

Trusses for high loads often have diagonals with hollow sections and joints with only flange connections to the truss chords. Therefore, for buckling out of plane an untypical behaviour, compared to column buckling, is relevant. First the geometric details of the studied members and joints are presented. Then the typical load carrying behaviour of these diagonals in compression is shown. An equivalent member is suggested, to determine the compression member capacity of the diagonals. Finally, an engineering model for the design of the diagonals in compression is presented, which doesn't need a comprehensive FE-model calculation. The background of the model is shown and the accuracy for practical examples will be summed up.
