Abstract

The upstream surge tank of the pumped-storage hydropower power plant (PSH) Gouvães with 880 MW is currently under construction in Portugal. It is a grid regulation power plant with four reversible Francis pump turbines utilizing 19 GWh of electricity storage capacity. The PSH is part of the hydroelectric project Alto Tâmega of Iberdrola on the Tâmega River. The upstream surge tank is a throttled shaft surge tank with integrated gate shaft which is an unthrottled riser connected to the pressure tunnel. It has an overflow into the main shaft. An additional aeration shaft enables an emergency closure of the gate at any time and for extreme load cases. The surge tank was examined in a transient hydraulic model on a scale of 1:25 at Graz University of Technology. For this purpose, an asymmetric orifice throttle and the final hydraulic design were developed and tested. The hydraulic effect of the surge tank was optimized and confirmed with regard to the water hammer compensation and the minimization of the volume requirement for the mass oscillation by unfavorable excitation of the hydraulic system for resonance load cases. Due to the direct integration of an overflow with a waterfall, no air is entrained into the pressure tunnel. The transient pressure surge phenomena were investigated by Power Vision Engineering (PVE) and are important boundary conditions for the robust surge tank design, especially for unfavorable extreme load rejections in generating and pump mode operations.
