N2 - Tetramethylammonium zinc azide hydrate is formed by the reaction of tetramethylammonium azide with zinc azide in aqueous solution. The crystals are monoclinic, a = 11.770(1), b = 6.553(1), c = 20.789(10) Å, β = 96.9(2)°, space group P21/n, Z = 4. The structure was solved by X-ray methods, R = 0.054. Both zinc atoms are octahedrally coordinated, the octahedra share nitrogen atoms as common edges and they are connected to form chains of composition Zn2(N3)5 · H2O. The azide groups are asymmetric and almost linear.
