Abstract

The ever-increasing number of data centers requires huge amounts of electrical energy and the amount of renewable energy, of which only a fraction is renewable energy, requiring a considerable amount of additional combustion or nuclear power plants. To minimize the waste of energy and further reduce the energy costs of a modern data center, high conversion efficiencies are sought. This paper proposes a new concept for a power supply including details on the control strategy for a Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS), achieving independent of high or low line input voltage the currently strictest efficiency classification of titanium, which is defined for high line by the 80 PLUS® organization. The key idea behind the proposed solution is the utilization of low voltage MOSFETs by splitting the input voltage, if required with a capacitive voltage divider, which makes it possible to utilize low voltage MOSFETs with a much better Figure of Merits (FOM) compared to high voltage MOSFETs. The paper presents details about the implementation of the control along with measurement results from a prototype in order to prove this new concept.
