Abstract

Abstract For the design of steel liners sometimes the case of external pressure is relevant, due to water pressure in the rock mass. In the cases of inspection with empty pipe the steel liner is susceptible to shell buckling, due to high slenderness of the steel pipe. After part 1 of this contribution showed the design due to external pressure for unstiffened steel pipes, this part 2 presents the design procedure for the more common cases of steel pipes with additional external rings stiffeners. First the design model in practice is presented, with two separate verifications, i) buckling of the ring, including the pipe, ii) isolated shell buckling of the pipe between two ring stiffeners. Then the results of a comprehensive numerical FE–study for representative practical cases are shown (critical external pressure pFEA), including a variation of the distance between stiffeners. The comparison of the critical external pressure shows shortcomings of the design procedure.

At the end a new design model for steel pipes with ring stiffeners is presented. Also the background and the accuracy of this design model, compared with the FE–study, is shown.
