SIESTA - A new standard for integrating polygraphic sleep recordings into a comprehensive model of human sleep and its validation in sleep disorders.

    Description

    The project aims at a computerized system for sleep analysis that describes major parts of sleep as a continuum and can also give a high temporal resolution. The system shall not be dependent on subjective rules and shall be derived from a large corpus of data from normals as well as patients with sleep disturbances. The long-term objective of SIESTA (beyond its three year duration) is to reach a critical mass of results to establish a standard for analyzing sleep used across the EU, which has the potential of becoming a world-wide standard. A large database of 400 full-night sleep recordings shall be set up by the SIESTA project. At 9 European sleep laboratories in 6 countries, with normals and different patient groups, polysomnographic recordings will be made with the same minimal recording standard (6 EEG channels, 10 additional non-EEG channels). The Department of Medical Informatics (DPMI) is involved in several tasks of this project, namely preprocessing of the recorded data, designing a continuous sleep analyzer, validation and refinement of the sleep analyzer.
