Pressure transients in railway tunnels

Project: Research project

Description

When a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel, compressing and accelerating the air at rest in front of the wave. Subsequently, reflections occur at the front and rear of the train as well as at the entrance and exit portals of the tunnel.

The aim of the project is the simulation of the unsteady flow in railway tunnels based on modern numerical calculation procedures. The calculation should generally be performed applying a second-order accurate "upwind-TVD-finite-difference¿ scheme for two- and three-dimensional flow.
