Description

Tool steels get the properties necessary for their specific range of application from a special heat treatment. During this process primary carbides (responsible for resistance to wear) and secondary carbides (responsible for resistance to elevated temperatures) precipitate and control the properties of the steel.
Due to the size of the secondary carbides (1 to 10 nm, mostly type MX) energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM) with a lateral resolution of below 1 nm is perfectly suited for the investigation of these precipitates.
Within this project we will investigate the influence of different heat treatments on size, distribution density and chemical composition of the MX precipitates.
