MXene - Search for Superconductivity and Magnetism in MXene Phases

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

Two-dimensional (2D) solids have generated significant interest recently. A prominent example of this is graphene. Following this effort, a family of 2D materials has been synthesized very recently by the exfoliation of the layered ternary transition metal carbides, which are known as MAX phase.
The project will involve (a) understanding of the basic electronic structure of the 2D-Xene phases in terms band structure, Fermi surfaces, (b) calculation of magnetic properties and exchanges, and (c) study of electron-phonon interaction for possible superconductivity.
Both the Indian and Austrain project leaders are experts on electronic structure of complex materials. While the expertise of Indian team lies on magnetism, the Austrain team has vast experience on superconductivity, including that in layered materials like intercalated graphites.
