Morphological and analytical TEM-investigations of Ni-Base Superalloys with EFTEM, EDX and PEELS in regard to gamma´- and carbide-precipitates

Project: Research project

Description

Ni base superalloys get a high resistance against corrosion and oxidation from special heat treatments. Additionally, they are highly resistant to elevated temperatures. These properties are the result of aging mechanisms (precipitation hardening). Especially g'-particles (Ni3(Al,Ti)) and carbides, which can grow in the matrix as well as in grain boundaries, strongly influence the hardness. Typical carbide precipitates are of type M23C6, MC, M6C and M7C3.
Using analytical electron microscopy the type of precipitates will be determined in different Ni base superalloys. Additionally, energy-filtering TEM (EFTEM) can determine the distribution as well as the exact locations (matrix and/or grain boundary) of the different precipitation phases. The chemical composition will be analyzed by quantifying PEEL- and EDX-spectra.
