Magnetic Perturbation Fields in Tokamaks and Space Plasma Reconnection

Rotating Magnetic Perturbations (RMPs) are the result of ergodic divertors, dynamic ergodic divertors, the use of MHD control coils or just error fields in tokamaks.
Kinetic plasma theory is used to study the penetration of such magnetic field perturbations and the associated generation of plasma rotation in Dynamic Ergodic Divertor (DED) experiments at TEXTOR (Forschungszentrum Jülich). The results will also be applied to study the Edge Localized Mode (ELM) control in experiments at DIII-D (National Fusion Facility San Diego).

Reconnection of magnetic fields is also an important process in space plasmas. A magnetohydrodynamic theoretical model is developed and the results are used to explain satellite observations.
