Based on a literature study and a review of the design models of international codes non-linear finite element calculations are carried out to investigate the failure mechanism under torsional loads and combined shear and torsional loads. To investigate little studied influencing parameters, additionally, experimental tests are done to analyse the shear strength of concrete members. Furthermore, a practice-oriented engineering model is derived, which is assured with probabilistic methods. A recalculation of existing bridge structures should demonstrate the applicability of the model.
