Because of specific biochemical and pathophysiological roles of adipocytes in different body locations, the local distribution of adipose tissue is of considerable scientific and medical interest. One possibility to assess this distribution is by means of electrical impedance analysis. Unfortunately, there is insufficient understanding on how electrical characteristics measurable at the body surface translate into quantitative and topographically meaningful information on subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue volumes, respectively. Aim of this project is to develop and optimize a multi-frequency and multi-electrode approach which allows the reliable estimation of both components in the abdominal region.
