ILSE - Integrated DVB/TDMA Service Evaluation

Project: Research project

Project Details

Description

The primary scope of activities within this project is a service evaluation of a combined DVB/TDMA satellite network for Internet/Intranet services by a representative user.
The technologies and systems for TDMA Satellite Gateways and IP-over-DVB, which are combined in an innovative way, have been developed over the past years. The Institute of Communications and Wave Propagation has contributed to the TDMA satellite gateway development, and currently, a gateway is integrated into the Telekom Austria network and trials and experiments are performed. The Institute of Computer Science of the University of Salzburg contributed to the development of an IP-over-DVB push service, which exploits the broadcast characteristic of satellite channels.
The aim of the project is to set up and evaluate an integrated network, combining bi-directional TDMA satellite links for voice/video/data services with an IP-over-DVB satellite distribution link for multimedia push services and asymmetric Internet access.
On the forward channel to the user all IP data (pushed or requested information) is sent from a central uplink station via the DVB broadcast channel to the users. For the return direction the TDMA satellite gateway can be used, or if not available a dial-up connection to an ISP. The TDMA satellite gateway forward channel is used for control information and offers videoconferencing and other IP-based services.
