HF16-003_Absorption Intensity Measuring Method for Noise Protection Walls

Project: Research project

Description

Traffic noise is a growing problem in Europe. Therefore, the determination of the performance of noise barriers is of particular importance. The absorption of noise barriers is currently being measured extensively in reverberation rooms or by means of Adrienne methods in the field. There is no correlation between these two methods. For this reason, an innovative measurement method based on the intensity measurement is proposed as a new method. Advantages are expected in terms of applicability, accuracy, reproducibility and comparability with measurements taken in in the reverberation room. The method has not yet been sufficiently researched for these intentions.

Within the scope of this project, first steps towards the applicability, accuracy, verification of the new algorithms and methods shall be undertaken in order to demonstrate the potential for a further development of the method. Moreover, the feasibility is to be verified by FEM simulations and calculations. Comparative analyses using the reverberation chamber method are intended to establish a reference to the in situ measurement.

The scientific analyses were mainly based on metrological investigations. A wide range of different situations, in the laboratory as well as in situ circumstances, were simulated in order to determine the different sensitivities and boundary conditions of the innovative measuring method. In addition to the metrological investigations were also carried out numerical computations based on the finite element method, which allowed in depth analysis of the boundary conditions.
