Project Details

Description

Gamma titanium aluminides are attractive for lightweight applications at elevated temperatures in the aerospace industry due to their high specific strength and stiffness and creep resistance in comparison with other engineering materials. Aircraft industry can increase the efficiency of low-pressure turbine blades by using lightweight high temperature alloys like gamma titanium aluminide based intermetallics (TiAl). The purpose of this project is to study the hot formability of two TiAl alloys and to determine the relationship between variations in thermo mechanical production parameters with the microstructure and the mechanical properties. Simulations of the forging process are to be carried out by FEM. Furthermore, a damage and microstructural model will be developed to predict the microstructure evolution during the processing steps. The ultimate goal is to develop a simulation-based design process.
