The implementation of RFID and EPCglobal standard solutions is hindered by a number of technical, social and educational constraints. The objective of the BRIDGE project is to research, develop and implement tools to enable the deployment of EPCglobal applications in Europe. The BRIDGE project consists of a series of business oriented clusters, technical development clusters and horizontal activities.
IAIK VLSI is involved in a technical development cluster, all our activities are concentrated around the topic "security". Our main activities are research contributions to WP 4 ("Security Framework") where we lead as partner "TUG (Graz University of Technology)" the tasks "RFID Tag Security" and "Anti-cloning of RFID Tags". Furthermore we contribute with our know-how to the Security Analysis and Requirement Definition of the same workpackage.
Our involvement it the IP clearly aims towards the second main overall objective of the project, which is defined as follows:
* "The second objective of BRIDGE is to enable a safe and secure supply chain where RFID-based e-pedigree is deployed to detect diversions, counterfeit products and to allow faster product recall. The impact of this deployment will be assessed through RFID pilot implementation trials focused on scenarios that are problematic with today's systems."
Our approach to achieve the ambitious goal is to embed standardized crypto primitives on passive tags without major increase of the tag costs (minimal area consumption) and without reduction of the reading distance (minimal power consumption).
The project BRIDGE was started in July 2006, the planned duration is 36 months. GS1 is coordinator of the integrated project, METRO, Carrefour, Auto-ID Labs or BT are only a very short selection of the 31 project partners.
We see our involvement into BRIDGE as a perfect opportunity to raise attention of IAIK's research on RFID security and additionally all RFID activities of TU Graz (proact) within the global EPC community.
