In order to avoid break downs, caused by broken damper bars, a method to diagnose such failures is presented. The main idea of the method is the separation of voltages of the field winding induced according to their polarity. So, the difference of the pole voltages can be determined. This voltage difference is caused by the magnetic field disturbance caused by the missing damper bar. The theoretical ideas are presented and checked by measurements in a model machine.
