In case of a fire in road or railway tunnels it is always necessary to keep the escape conditions as good as possible. Most of the victims of major fires in tunnels are because they couldn't leave the tunnel in time and were trapped by smoke, or the rescue teams could not reach the place of the accident due to smoke and temperature conditions. Major activities have now been launched to improve the situation in the tunnel atmosphere during the event of a fire. In the framework of a research project of the german based Brandschutztechnische Zentrum water mist systems we developed and testet under real world fire conditions in a road tunnel. The efficiency of water mist was investigated in order to improve the escape conditions for people.
