The plasma used in this investigation is a capacitively coupled helium plasma, developed at the Graz University of Technology in cooperation with Anton Paar GmbH is coupled into a water-cooled fused silica discharge tube by means of two annular electrodes. The RF-power dissipated in the plasma is approximately 140 W. An interference filter spectrometer connected to the plasma by fiber optics is used for end-on observation of the atomic emmission. In this work, on the one hand methods for the determination of the inorganic halogen content in water samples have been developed using the flow injection technique (FIA) to introduce the analyte into the plasma. In the FIA-manifold, which is connected to the plasma source via a gas-liquid separator, the halogens are generated by chemical oxidation, separated from the liquid phase, and transported into the plasma. the proposed procedure has been tested for chloride determination in real water samples and a very good correspondence to the results with those obtained by ion chromatography was achieved. The emission from chlorine, bromine and iodine is monitored at the spectral lines in the IR-region. On the other hand the coupling of a graphite furnace as a sample introduction system to the SCP was evaluated for the determination of chlorine and bromine.
